This guide walks you through connecting the DataGalaxy Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat) so the assistant can search your data catalog, fetch metadata, and use DataGalaxy tools directly in your conversations.
DataGalaxy MCP exposes read-only access to your DataGalaxy platform: search, plus object details, links, users, tags, and more. In addition, DataGalaxy MCP provides an ability to add the comments and upate attributes. Mistral Vibe acts as an MCP client: it discovers the tools your server provides and calls them (with your approval) inside a chat.
You can connect in two ways. OAuth 2.1 is the recommended method: you simply sign in to DataGalaxy and approve access, with no token to copy or store. If your setup does not support OAuth, you can still connect with a Personal Access Token (see Alternative: connect with a Personal Access Token below).
Which Mistral plan do you need? Adding a custom MCP connector in Mistral Vibe is an administrator feature, not a paid-only one. On the Free, Pro, and Student plans the account owner is the administrator by default, so any of these plans lets you add the DataGalaxy connector. On Team and Enterprise plans, a workspace administrator enables the connector on behalf of users, which is the recommended setup for organisations that want centralised control. Plan availability can change by region: confirm on Mistral's pricing page before rolling this out.
Prerequisites
- A Mistral Vibe account with administrator rights (account owner on Free/Pro/Student, or a workspace admin on Team/Enterprise).
- A DataGalaxy instance with the MCP Server enabled for your organisation.
- A DataGalaxy user account. With OAuth, the connector acts with your own permissions and can never do more than you can already do in DataGalaxy.
- Your DataGalaxy MCP Server URL (Step 2).
Step 1: Enable the DataGalaxy MCP Server
If the MCP Server is not yet active for your company, contact your DataGalaxy account manager to have it enabled. You can confirm it is active from the DataGalaxy MCP Server option in the platform's profile menu.
Step 2: Copy your DataGalaxy MCP Server URL
Your server URL follows this format:
https://<instance name>.api.datagalaxy.com/mcp/
Open the profile menu (your avatar, top right) and select DataGalaxy MCP Server, then copy the exact entry point URL shown in the window. Keep the trailing /mcp/ path: the connector will not initialise without the correct path.
Step 3: Open Connectors in Mistral Vibe
In Mistral Vibe, connectors live in Work mode.
- Go to chat.mistral.ai and sign in with your administrator account.
- Switch to the Work tab (the Work / Code switcher at the top of the sidebar).
- Open Context → Connectors.
- Click + Add Connector, then choose Custom MCP Connector (the Add custom connector panel opens).
Step 4: Add the connector with OAuth 2.1 (recommended)
In the Add custom connector panel, fill in the fields below. Use the copy-paste values:
- Connector name: copy and paste
DataGalaxy MCP
- Server: paste the URL you copied in Step 2, including the trailing
/mcp/. Example (replacedkwwith your instance name):https://<instance name>.api.datagalaxy.com/mcp/
- Description(optional): copy and paste
DataGalaxy data catalog: search assets, metadata, lineage and glossary.
- Under Authentication, select OAuth2.1. Leave Advanced OAuth Settings turned off: DataGalaxy does not require any client ID or secret to be entered.
- Click Connect.
Step 5: Authorize access in DataGalaxy
Mistral Vibe redirects you to DataGalaxy. Sign in with your DataGalaxy account if prompted, then review the Authorize access screen for the mistral-mcp-client application. It lists what the application will be able to do:
- Consult and modify your DataGalaxy catalog with your current permissions: it cannot do more than you can already do in DataGalaxy.
- View your DataGalaxy roles.
- Confirm your identity.
- View your name and basic profile information.
- View your email address.
Click Allow access. You are sent back to Mistral Vibe, where the DataGalaxy MCP connector now shows a default connection with the status Valid, along with the list of available tools.
Only authorise applications you trust. Click Deny if you did not start this connection yourself.
Step 6: Enable the connector and review its tools
Once connected, DataGalaxy MCP appears in your Connectors list along with the tools it provides (search, semantic search, get object, get links, get users, get tags, and more). To use it in a conversation:
- Start a chat in Work mode.
- Click the + icon (or type
/) in the message box and select Tools. - Enable the DataGalaxy MCP connector for the conversation, and turn off any tools you don't need for the current task.
Step 7: Start asking questions
You can now query your governed catalog in natural language. Mistral Vibe will ask for your approval the first time it calls a DataGalaxy tool. Example prompts:
- "Search DataGalaxy for objects related to customer revenue and summarise their definitions."
- "Show me the owner, tags, and linked objects for the Customer table."
- "List the business terms in the glossary that mention churn."
Managing per-function permissions
You control whether Mistral Vibe asks for approval each time it calls a DataGalaxy function, or pre-authorises it:
- Go to Connectors and open the DataGalaxy MCP connector.
- In the Tools section, each tool is set to Ask by default, so Mistral Vibe requests your approval before every call. Use the permission switch next to a tool (or the group-level selector) to set the ones you use most to always allowed.
DataGalaxy MCP is read-only, so pre-authorising its functions is low risk. Even so, review tool inputs and outputs periodically and only enable the tools you actually need.
Alternative: connect with a Personal Access Token
If OAuth is not available in your environment, you can authenticate with a Personal Access Token (PAT) sent as a bearer token.
Get your Personal Access Token (PAT)
- In DataGalaxy, open the profile menu, select Profile and Settings, then the Security tab.
- Copy your Personal Access Token with the copy icon (the other icons regenerate or delete it if needed).
- Store it somewhere safe: treat it like a password.
Add the connector with a bearer token
- Follow Step 3 to open the Add custom connector panel and fill in the Connector name and Server fields exactly as in Step 4.
- Under Authentication, select the Bearer Token (HTTP bearer / API key) method instead of OAuth2.1.
- Paste your PAT into the token field and click Connect.
- Continue with Step 6.
Troubleshooting
If you see "MCP connection requires additional information or is invalid," check the following:
- Endpoint URL: make sure the path is correct and ends in
/mcp/. Remove any accidental extra characters or a doubled trailing slash. - Server reachability: the server must be reachable over HTTPS with a valid TLS certificate.
- OAuth authorization: if the DataGalaxy sign-in or Authorize access screen does not appear, or the connection shows as not valid, remove the connector and add it again, then approve access with Allow access. Make sure your browser does not block pop-ups or redirects from Mistral Vibe.
- Authentication (PAT): if you use a token, verify it is current and hasn't been revoked. Regenerate it in DataGalaxy under Profile → Security if needed.
- MCP enabled: confirm the MCP Server is active for your organisation (Step 1).
